Motorcycles

For some people, riding a motorcycle on a summer day is the best way to enjoy the nice weather. It’s important, however, to understand the risks and dangers involved in Motorcycling. Always make sure that you take all necessary safety precautions before getting on your bike! It’s also a great idea to take a motorcycle safety course.

Motorcycles can also get very expensive. At Roughley Insurance, we can help you find the right package to suit your motorcycle insurance needs. Whether you are a novice rider, or very experienced, or whether you have a small scale 250cc bike, or a high-end 1500cc Harley Davidson, we have a variety of packages to offer.

It’s important to recognize that Motorcycling is considered a seasonal sport. Rates for motorcycle insurance are calculated based on seasonal use only, therefore, reduction of coverages during the off season is not typically an option.

Snowmobiles & ATV’s

Contrary to popular belief, recreational vehicles such as snowmobiles and ATV’s are NOT covered under a Homeowners Policy, even if they are always kept in your garage. These vehicles need to be covered under an Ontario Automobile Insurance Policy. In most cases, you will be required to carry the minimum liability limit for Ontario in order to obtain a trail permit or license plates for these vehicles.

Rates for Snowmobiles and ATV’s are very much driven by the Engine Displacement and value of the machine. It’s important to make sure that the vehicle that you are purchasing is not listed on a “High Performance” or “restricted vehicle” list, because insurance rates for these vehicles could get expensive. Feel free to call us to find out if the machine you are interested is on one of these lists.

In most cases, these types of vehicles need to be insured along with your Private Passenger Automobile. Some insurance companies will insure your recreational vehicle on a “stand alone” basis, however, this usually comes with a surcharge.

Just the facts about…..

Go-Peds, E-Bikes, Battery Operated Toys and Devices

There has been a lot of discussion surrounding these items including coverage availability or lack thereof. What exactly are Go-Peds, E-Bikes or Battery Operated Toys?

E-Bikes
As of October 3, 2006, Ontarians can use power-assisted bikes (known as electric bicycles or e-bikes) on Ontario Roads. This is a three year pilot to evaluate their use on roads and highways where conventional bicycles are currently allowed. They will be treated as bicycles and must follow the same rules of the road as set out in the Highway Traffic Act that applies to cyclists. Operators must be 16 years of age or older and must wear an approved bicycle helmet at all times.

Go-Bikes
These devices are also known as Electric and Motorized Scooters. They do not meet the provincial equipment safety standards for on-road use and cannot be operated on roads in Ontario. They can only be operated on private property. The MTO also suggest that users contact their local municipalities for by-laws pertaining to their use on sidewalks and bike paths.

Battery Operated Toys & Devices
This category includes such items as:

  • Battery powered toys including cars and jeeps that are designed for children to ride on.
  • The Segway Human Transporter.

The Insurance industry continues to face coverage availability challenges with respect to some of these devices. You may notice that your policies will have a sticker that reads “Motorized Vehicles (Toys) – Your policy may not cover loss or damage caused by a motorized vehicle”
